Sam Quinones,
Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic

Bloomsbury Press, Paperback Edition 2016,
353 pages, $18.00

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, after creating a Justice Department task force targeting prescription drug manufacturers and distributors of prescription opioids, was interviewed May 1 by the Washington Post. Sessions asked his interviewer: “Have you read Dreamland? For the first time, you get a glimpse of how it [the American opioid addiction epidemic] really developed.”

When crime reporter Sam Quinones testified to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on Jan. 9, 2018 on one of the greatest crimes against America in its history, he had already gone beyond the extraordinary understanding of the nation’s drug addiction epidemic “glimpsed” in this book, published in 2016. He now knew that new national missions, like a “new Apollo Project” for the space program and a “new Marshall Plan” for Appalachia, were needed to lift Americans back up out of the mud of depression, personal isolation, and addiction.

Our Strange Attraction to Self-Destructive Behaviors, Choices and Incentives

Our Strange Attraction to Self-Destructive Behaviors, Choices and Incentives

Charles Hugh Smith returned to RogueMoneyRadio for an 04/16/2018 program. The following is his latest article reproduced here with the author's permission and links to the original at his Of Two Minds site. -- JWS

Self-destruction isn't a bug, it's a feature of our socio-economic system.

The gravitational pull of self-destructive behaviors, choices and incentives is scale-invariant, meaning that we can discern the strange attraction to self-destruction in the entire scale of human experience, from individuals to families to groups to entire societies.

The proliferation of self-destructive behaviors, choices and incentives in our socio-economic system is profoundly troubling. Exhibit 1 is the opioid epidemic (charts in the original story). How did we reach this level of individual and social self-destruction?

The Time Has Come To Eliminate Poverty, and Provide a Future for Our Children

The Time Has Come To Eliminate Poverty, and Provide a Future for Our Children

The reported departure of National Security Adviser and soon to be retired three star general H.R. McMaster from the Trump White House may be a positive sign. However, cabinet members and neocon advisers like UN Ambassador Nikki Haley who have egged on this President against his better instincts and campaign promises to get further bogged down in illegally occupying Syria, using defeated Daesh remnants as a pretext to keep thousands of troops in the country while admitting that Iran is the real target of this occupation, remain in place. The danger of a false flag, further aggression carried out by Israel or Washington's NATO ally Turkey, or even inadvertent clashes between American and Russian forces quickly escalating remains intolerable. The long suffering Syrian people, as well as citizens of all countries interested in global peace and stability, deserve better.

The Adversaries Are Wall Street and London's City — Warnings of a Financial Crash in 2018

The Adversaries Are Wall Street and London's City — Warnings of a Financial Crash in 2018

In just four weeks President Trump will deliver a State of the Union Address, with his promise to rebuild America's economic infrastructure on the line, and in doubt. The United States and Europe are facing a new financial crash centered in Wall Street and City of London, and the President is wasting time pretending that the stock market represents a great recovery of the U.S. economy.

The American people, who have been rallying with us to defend the President from the British assault led by legal assassin Robert Mueller, must get through the heads of Trump and Congress that there has been no economic recovery. The warnings are multiplying that the immense corporate debt bubble is getting ready to collapse, and drastically cutting those corporations' taxes will only force more air into that bubble and blow it out.

New Vaccine Breakthrough in War Against Opiods Addictions

New Vaccine Breakthrough in War Against Opiods Addictions

Last week featured grim reports regarding a silent mass killer of Americans, one that has been mushrooming since 9/11 opened up a flood of cheap opiates from Afghanistan. According to National Public Radio an estimated 1.5 million Americans of working age are out of the workforce due to opiod addictions. "According to Princeton economist Alan Krueger, 47 percent of prime-age men not in the labor force used pain medication — and two-thirds of that subgroup used prescription drugs." The same outlet reported several months ago that U.S. life expectancy, already among the lowest of so-called developed nations, has dropped in no small part due to middle aged and especially rural whites fatally overdosing on painkillers

While these developments are, as with the explosion in alcoholism and drug addiction in 1990s Russia, driven in part by grim economic prospects in many American communities, synthetic opiods like fentanyl have flooded North America with unprecedented, if often lethal potency at a cheap price. A new vaccine currently in trials, as The Sirius Report's London Paul writes, could offer hope for treatment and drastically reducing the hellish withdrawals addicts feel when they try to break free from these drugs. -- JWS
